MCP Servers for SEO: Tools That Connect Claude and ChatGPT to Your Site Data
An SEO MCP server is a connector that lets an AI assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT query live SEO data, or act on your site, through the Model Context Protocol. Below, servers are grouped by job: keyword and backlink data, Search Console, crawling, CMS access and internal linking, plus a master table comparing all 18.
OpenAI reports 1.2 billion weekly users (https://openai.com/index/devday-2026-recap/), and Google says AI Mode has passed 1 billion monthly actives (https://blog.google/company-news/inside-google/message-ceo/alphabet-earnings-q2-2026/) (both self-reported). Sources: vendor docs and public repositories, checked November 2026.
What is MCP?
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open-source standard for connecting AI applications to external systems; its docs call it "a USB-C port for AI applications." Anthropic announced it on November 25, 2024; Claude, ChatGPT, VS Code and Cursor support it.
Anthropic's launch post (https://www.anthropic.com/news/model-context-protocol) named the problem: "even the most sophisticated models are constrained by their isolation from data." Dhanji R. Prasanna, CTO at Block, an early adopter, said at launch: "Open technologies like the Model Context Protocol are the bridges that connect AI to real-world applications, ensuring innovation is accessible, transparent, and rooted in collaboration."
A tool is a function the AI can call, such as "update post." Remote servers run over Streamable HTTP with OAuth: paste one URL, approve access. The split that matters is read versus write, and the few servers that can change a live site need more care.
Which MCP servers provide keyword and backlink data?
Ahrefs, Semrush, DataForSEO, SE Ranking and Moz all publish official MCP servers, and each draws on your existing plan or API allowance.
Ahrefs needs a Lite plan or higher; calls consume API units (OAuth keys default to 200,000 per month), and there are no write tools. Semrush needs Pro or Guru, Semrush One or a Trends API plan; its Projects methods are read-only.
DataForSEO's MCP is free and open source; the APIs behind it are pay-as-you-go, and its api_request tool can create API tasks, so it can spend credits but never edits your site. SE Ranking warns "not every API endpoint is available through MCP" and the key "has the same access as your account." Moz is in beta, and only account owners can use it.
Verdict: Ahrefs or Semrush if you already pay for them; DataForSEO for pay-as-you-go data.
Is there an official Search Console MCP server?
No: Google publishes an official Google Analytics MCP server but none for Search Console. On November 6, 2026, Search Console was missing from Google's supported MCP products list and its google/mcp repository.
Every GSC option is third-party code on the public Search Console API. mcp-gsc (community, MIT) handles search analytics, URL inspection, sitemaps and properties, with destructive actions like delete_site disabled unless you set GSC_ALLOW_DESTRUCTIVE=true; mcp-server-gsc is one read-only search_analytics tool; InhouseSEO hosts 18 tools and writes only to its own app.
Google's Analytics server is "available for read requests only," yet its repository lists opt-in write tools behind an --allow-write flag. Bing has no official server; the community mcp-server-bing-webmaster can submit URLs and remove sites, so treat it as a write tool.
Crawling and audit servers
Crawling servers give the AI a fresh view of your pages; none write to your website, though some write local files or interact with pages.
Screaming Frog's official MCP covers crawl data, reports and bulk exports, and needs a paid license with database storage mode. Firecrawl (official) ships 27 scraping, mapping and crawling tools, and is not read-only: interact can click, type and fill forms. SEO Audit Console (Houtini) is free, pairs GSC with a crawl, runs 143 checks and drafts fixes that "never write to your site." SEO Cartograph's roughly 30 tools drop proposals into a dashboard you approve.
Verdict: Screaming Frog for license holders, SEO Audit Console for free audits.
CMS write access: WordPress MCP and WordPress.com
The WordPress MCP Adapter is the official way to give an AI controlled access to a self-hosted WordPress site: it turns abilities registered through the Abilities API, in core since WordPress 6.9, into MCP tools. Abilities stay hidden unless marked public; what the AI can change depends on them and the user's permissions.
WordPress.com's separate official server has 19 writing abilities for posts, pages, comments, categories, tags and media, each with its own toggle, on all paid plans; new posts start as drafts and deletes go to trash for 30 days.
Which MCP servers handle internal linking?
LinkBoss and Silotree are the two dedicated internal linking servers that can write to your site; SEO Cartograph, RankCLI and the seoskills.dev CLI only propose links.
A dedicated server matters because the AI has to link to pages that exist. In a 2026 study of more than 220,000 citation URLs from AI models and research agents, Rao, Wong and Callison-Burch found 3% to 13% were hallucinated, with no Wayback Machine record they ever existed. A linking server supplies real URLs and anchors instead.
LinkBoss MCP
LinkBoss is an AI-powered internal linking tool that builds semantically relevant links in bulk across WordPress, Shopify and other CMSs, used by over 8,000 SEOs. Its internal linking MCP server (https://linkboss.io/internal-linking-mcp-server/) lets Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or VS Code read every page's links and anchors, plus Search Console data such as declining and near-page-one pages.
The AI finds link opportunities with the exact sentence and an anchor score, builds silos, and fixes anchor cannibalization, http:// links and repeated links. Every write starts as a dry run with linked words in brackets and the credit cost; it adds up to 25 links per call, refuses an anchor already linked elsewhere, and logs every change. Reading and fixing is free; adding a link costs 1 or 2 credits.
The limits: MCP comes only with paid plans, and ChatGPT Pro accounts are read-only. Setup is a URL plus OAuth sign-in, as the MCP setup guide (https://linkboss.io/knowledgebase/mcp-server/) shows.
It works on any website: direct insertion on WordPress and Shopify, and on other platforms the assistant you already use to update the site applies the approved links.
Verdict: LinkBoss is the best fit for large sites that need links matched by meaning, with Search Console context and silos in one session.
Silotree MCP
Silotree reports a site score, shows suggestions inside their sentence, and flags broken links and cannibalization; write mode is optional (two-step preview, Undo) and it never rewrites a post. MCP "works on every plan, Free included."
Verdict: Silotree is the best choice for trying AI-assisted linking at no cost.

Which AI apps support custom MCP servers?
Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and VS Code/Copilot all accept custom servers. Claude offers connectors on every plan (Free allows one); Claude Code uses claude mcp add --transport http <name> <url> plus /mcp. ChatGPT reserves full access, writes included, for Business, Enterprise and Edu (Pro is read and fetch; Plus not listed); Cursor and VS Code ask approval by default.
Security: how to connect SEO servers safely
Approve every write, grant the fewest permissions, and assume any tool label could be wrong.
- Keep approval on. The MCP spec says there SHOULD always be a human in the loop who can deny tool calls; ChatGPT requires confirmation before writes, and in Research mode Claude may call connector tools without asking.
- Use least privilege. MCP's best practices: start with low-risk reads, grant more only when a privileged action is first attempted. Run GSC servers in read mode, leave destructive flags off, give CMS servers a role that can draft but not delete.
- Watch tool poisoning and labels. Invariant Labs disclosed tool poisoning (instructions hidden in tool descriptions) and "rug pulls." The spec says clients MUST treat annotations as untrusted, and OpenAI's docs note "write actions to occur even if the MCP server has tagged the action as read only."
- Separate crawlers from writers. Crawled pages are untrusted input, the route for indirect prompt injection (OWASP LLM01:2025); if a session can write to your CMS, confirm every write.
How to pick a starter stack
Start with one data server you already pay for, one Search Console server, and a write-capable server only for the job you want automated.
In-house SEO. Ahrefs or Semrush plus mcp-gsc in default mode; for linking on a large WordPress or Shopify site, LinkBoss puts link data and Search Console context in one connector.
Agency. DataForSEO's pay-as-you-go pricing suits uneven client workloads; for linking across many sites, LinkBoss's Agency plan covers 10 sites and Dominator covers 50.
Content team. WordPress MCP Adapter or WordPress.com MCP limited to drafts, plus SEO Audit Console for free checks; start linking with Silotree's free tier and move to LinkBoss once bulk semantic linking matters.
FAQ
Is there an official Google Search Console MCP server? No. On November 6, 2026, Google listed no Search Console server among its supported MCP products. Community servers such as mcp-gsc call the public Search Console API instead.
Which SEO MCP servers can change my website? The WordPress MCP Adapter, WordPress.com MCP, LinkBoss, Silotree in write mode, and the community GSC and Bing servers for property and sitemap actions. Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz Data and DataForSEO return data and do not edit your site.
Do I need a linking MCP if I already use the WordPress MCP Adapter? For a few links you place yourself, the adapter can be enough. On a larger site, a dedicated server such as LinkBoss or Silotree supplies the link inventory, anchor conflict checks and previews a general CMS server lacks.
